Many historical fiction authors are playing this game on the blogosphere, where we introduce our main character in an already published or yet-to-be published work, so here goes mine. I want to say thanks to Elizabeth Felt who tagged me in her post!
1) What is the name of your character? Is he/she fictional or a historic person?
Laura Seaton is a (fictional) modern-day history professor whose career is taking a sudden detour.
2) When and where is the story set?
Laura discovers a mysterious Book of Hours belonging to Lady Margaret Beaufort (the mother of Henry Tudor) and travels back in time to 15th century England on the eve of the Battle of Bosworth – the final battle in the Wars of the Roses. Laura finds herself face to face with Lady Margaret, who has an urgent request for her.
3) What should we know about him/her?
Laura is truly a fish out of water. Struggling to succeed in the shark tank of academia, Laura is a misfit whose job is on the line when she stumbles across the Book of Hours and finds herself far from home.
4) What is the main conflict? What messes up his/her life?
Laura is thrust into a foreign time and foreign land on the brink of war, into situations she has only read of in text books. Lady Margaret says Laura’s coming was foretold in a vision and that Laura is the one person capable of healing her son of the dreaded sweating sickness days before he battles for the throne of England.
5) What is the personal goal of the character?
Laura wishes to honor Lady Margaret’s request and save Henry Tudor so that he can live to fight the Battle of Bosworth. But how can she, a history professor, hope to heal a future king of England from a deadly disease? And even if she does, will she survive to return to her previous life and the career she once valued above everything else?
6) Is there a working title for this novel, and can we read more about it?
The working title is “The Prevailing Wind”. I haven’t blogged much about it, but I hope to mention it more on this blog and FB in the coming months.
7) When can we expect the book to be published?
I am currently writing Book 2, working title “The Rising Sun”, and hope to pitch both these to agents very soon. Please stay tuned to this site, Twitter, and FB so that I can keep you posted on my progress!
