However you are spending your long holiday weekend (for those in the U.S., that is), I hope you enjoy it with family and friends, food and fun, and most of all, fireworks. And each year, I like to take this opportunity to sincerely thank those men and women in our armed services, both past and present, as well as their family members. All of you make enormous sacrifices so that we Americans have the freedom we cherish. God bless you on this day and all days!
Now, for a bit of trivia to mark the occasion:
In 1991, the 24th authentic copy of the Declaration of Independence was found and sold at auction for $2.4 million. The seller bought the document for the whopping sum of $4, and actually, he didn’t know he’d purchased an authentic copy of the Declaration at the time. In fact, the man bought a damaged painting at a flea market in PA simply because he liked the frame. When the man removed the frame, the copy of the Declaration was found concealed behind the painting. Talk about a flea market find!
Since then, two more authentic copies have been located, one of which was found in a box within the British National Archives – part of a lot of captured documents that had been sitting in the archives for hundreds of years.
Happy 4th everyone!
