After really enjoying the latest in the Lady Emily mysteries by Tasha Alexander, I decided to go backwards and see where the story all began. This is the first in the Lady Emily Mysteries series, and here we learn of Lady Emily’s first marriage, her budding romance with Colin Hargreaves, and the mystery that first pulls her into sleuthing. The story begins shortly after Emily, Lady Ashton, receives news that her new husband Philip has died while on safari in Africa. The news does not particularly upset Emily – she married more to escape her mother’s control than for love – but what she discovers by going through her late husband’s diaries, is that Philip did indeed marry for love. Emily becomes fascinated with the character of her late husband and takes up his interest in Greco-Roman antiquities. It is then that she discovers his involvement in the theft and forgery of priceless works of art. Philip may be dead, but those still involved in the operation have every reason to keep it quiet as Emily tries to discern her late husband’s true character – a man she never fully knew.
I love rounding out the story, and here, we get a glimpse of Lady Emily at the beginning, before her sleuthing skills mature. This is a younger, more impetuous, more immature Emily that readers of the later books will recognize. It makes you appreciate her savvy even more in the later books. Enjoy it!
